About the Study
Thank you for your interest in this study. The purpose of our study is to determine if a program called "PrEPare for Work" will help make Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) more effective in preventing HIV among men who report having exchanged sex with another man for money, goods, drugs, a place to stay, or other items of value. Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is an HIV medication taken daily as an oral pill, or as an injection by a healthcare professional every 2 months, to help reduce the risk of getting HIV. The effectiveness of PrEP for HIV prevention relies in large part on taking these medicines in a consistent way.
If you meet the eligibility criteria and are interested in enrolling in the study, you will be asked to attend a baseline visit. During this visit, study staff will explain the study in detail and you will decide if you want to participate. If you decide to participate, we ask you to complete surveys about topics including sexual behavior, drug and alcohol use, mental health, and HIV/STI testing history. The baseline visit lasts approximately 2 hours and can be completed in person or over Zoom.
At the end of the baseline visit, you would be randomized to one of two study conditions. If you are assigned to the intervention condition, you would meet with a PrEP navigator on staff to support your sexual health goals. If you are assigned to the comparison condition, you would receive a referral to the appropriate PrEP clinic. All participants will be asked to complete 1-month and 2-month follow-up visits.
All eligible participants can earn up to $525. Participants who do not start PrEP and only complete the first stage will receive up to $140. Participants who start PrEP and go on to the second stage can earn up to the full $525 for participation.
Participants in the second stage of the study will be asked to complete another baseline visit, during which we will collect a release of medical information, as well as 4-, 8-, and 12-month follow-up visits. You will be tested for HIV and STIs at the 4- and 12-month follow-up visits for research purposes and have a small sample of your hair collected at 4-, 8-, and 12-months for PrEP testing. HIV/STI testing may consist of blood, oral swab, and urine sample collection.
Your participation is completely confidential and voluntary, and your name will not be associated with the information you provide on any of the study activities.
Do you consent to complete this survey to complete the pre-screening process and see if you may be eligible for the study?
